Based on the feedback of the exhibitors, the organizers of Baselworld declared that the 2018 edition will be limited to six days instead of the traditional eight. Baselworld 2018 will run from March 22 to 27. |

Pink Star diamond fetches record $71.2m in Hong Kong Auction.
A pink diamond broke the world record for a gemstone sold at auction, after it fetched $71.2 million in Hong Kong.
The 59.60-carat "Pink Star" is the largest in its class ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
Sotheby's auction house said it was "proud" of the sale.

Stronger global trade growth to benefit Middle East economy in 2017.
Recovery in global trade flows combined with improving demand conditions in the GCC markets, especially Saudi Arabia, is expected to benefit the UAE economy this year, according to economists.
Latest global trade data points to the strengthening in Chinese port throughput volume numbers in early 2017 as part of China’s exports to Africa, Europe, the Indian subcontinent and MENA. A significant share of Chinese shipment to these markets transit through the UAE ports.
The UAE trade data for 2016 show that activity remained resilient, supported by the diversified trade base despite the sharp slowdown in GCC economic activity precipitated by low oil prices and fiscal adjustments. Growth in total trade accelerated by 8.8 per cent (in metric tonnes) in the first nine months of 2016, up from 3.4 per cent in 2015.

The British auction house Christie’s experienced record breaking sales at its Important Watches auction, with a rare Patek Philippe selling for $499,500. It became the most expensive watch ever sold at auction in the Middle East, whilst the event as a whole realised the highest ever total value for a watch auction in the Middle East at $5.35 million. The record breaking watch was a 1981, 18-carat gold Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar chronograph design with moon phases. |
