103,200 visitors recorded with +2.5 % increase on 2010.

BaselWorld 2012: 8-15 march

BASELWORLD, the leading show for watches and jewellery closed its doors on a resounding success with optimism by the recovery that began in early 2010.

Double-digit growth:

A total of 1892 exhibitors from 44 countries participated in BASELWORLD 2011. More than 103,200 visitors from over 100 countries visited this year’s event representing 2.5% growth in visitors.

With the 14th consecutive monthly rise in the sales of Swiss Watches & Jewellery the month of March 2011 is expected to register yet another double- digit growth.

The first two months of this year also provided further evidence of the sunshine in the industry, with growth in sales of Swiss watches of 18.1 percent compared to the same period last year. The talk of the industry has shifted from the increase in export to keeping up with the production. All indications are that 2011 appears to be following in the footsteps of 2008 in terms of sales and export results.

Watch trends at BASELWORLD 2011

The following are the common trends showcased by different Swiss leading timekeeping manufacturers as follows:

1-     Models with simple elegant lines inspired by the Art Deco style of the 1920’s and 30’s and by the classic years of the 1950’s and 1960’s have made a strong comeback.

2-     Historic models have been re-interpreted and re-designed.

3-     Geometric shapes, mainly round, have been fashioned in the purest Swiss tradition, combining age-old savior-faire with a discretion that has now become indispensable.

4-     More modest dimensions ingeniously highlight finely worked guilloche, embossed, openworked and multi-layered dials, expressing beauty and simplicity enhanced by quality and precision.

5-     There were many innovations too, with several world firsts in the area of movements, functions and design presented alongside models equipped with in-house movements, some with grand complications like tourbillons, perpetual calendars and striking-mechanisms.

6-     Steel and gold remain the favorite material in 2011.

BASELWORLD 2012 will be held between 8 to 15 March.
