Salon des Grandes Complications 2018: Abu Dhabi sets the stage for a harmony of science and sublime watchmaking art.
Salon des Grandes Complications (SDGC) is the oldest and most prestigious Horlogerie exhibition in the Middle East region running annually, now in its 7th edition of resounding success. It provides the perfect forum for watch collectors, connoisseurs and high net-worth individuals in the UAE and around to gainfully interact with the world’s finest master craftsmen and fabled watchmaking maisons, and to acquire prized masterpieces for their personal treasure.
The 2018 edition of SDGC Abu Dhabi edition is scheduled to be held from 25th to 29th October at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and will be open from 4 pm to 10 pm daily. Held along with the Jewellery Watch Show 2018, the event will feature such illustrious brands as Breitling, Cyrus, Kerbedanz, Krayon, Louis Moinet, Panerai, Prologue, Schwarz Etienne and S.T. Dupont. These renowned houses have always fascinated the world with their complex and classic timepieces that blend stunning technological advancements with sublime watchmaking art. They will be putting on show traditional masterpieces along with the most recent innovations, many of them for the first time on public display.
The annual B2C exposition has always been a major success with both exhibitors and visitors, with their numbers increasingly significantly over the years. The Middle East, and UAE in particular, is one of the fastest growing markets for Swiss watches and import figures are growing steadily. UAE ranks as the 10th biggest importer of Swiss watches with figures around CHF891.4 million in the year 2017, and this is well reflected in the steadily increasing stream of visitors to the show over the years, including members of the royal family, high profile dignitaries and influential buyers from all over the GCC region.
Organized in partnership with Bentley Motors, Salon des Grandes Complications is organized by Arabian Watches & Jewellery magazine and held under the support of the Embassy of Switzerland in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

Cartier files lawsuit against Saks for $40M
The French jeweler, which is owned by Geneva-based luxury conglomerate Richemont, took legal action against Saks Fifth Avenue over its location in the department store’s New York City flagship, located at 611 Fifth Ave.
Cartier and Saks signed a five-year retail lease in 2016 but when Saks started its first-floor renovation and proposed a new spot for the popular brand, Cartier pushed back, refusing to “move to a location within the store that does not align with the Maison’s positioning and image standards,” the company said in a statement.
Saks terminated Cartier’s lease following the renovation relocation dustup, which is what prompted the jewelry brand to take the retailer to court. Cartier’s complaint against the department store was filed in the Supreme Court of the State of New York; it alleges breach of contract. In it, the company states that the renovation led to a decrease in foot traffic, as well as “significant dust and construction debris,” and asks that Saks be stopped from terminating the contract. The complaint also asserts that damages could be in excess of $40 million.
