Abu Dhabi hotel revenues rise by 10% so far in 2014

Abu Dhabi’s hotels and hotel apartments saw a 33 percent jump in guests last month compared to February 2013 with occupancy reaching 81 percent. Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) said that 262,193 guests checked into the emirate’s accommodation during February, delivering a 21 percent month-on-month rise in guest nights to 815,718. February’s performance continued the growth seen so far in Abu Dhabi in 2014. In the first two months of the year, the emirate received 539,163 hotel guests, up 35 percent. Year-to-date occupancy levels have risen by 7 percent to 79 percent while hotel revenues have increased by 10 percent to AED1.026 billion ($279.4 million). However, average room rates over the period dropped 9 percent to AED458.

 

Movado's net income declined by 11%

Movado Group's net sales increased 7% year on year to $132.3 million for the fourth quarter that ended on January 31, as measured by generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Cost of sales rose 3.4% to $63 million. Net income attributed to the Movado Group fell 9.2% year on year to $7.2 million or 28 cents per share. Net income for the group fell 10.9% to $50.9 million or $1.97 per share.

 

Dubai Duty Free sales increased up by 10% during the first quarter of 2014

Dubai Duty Free (DDF) recorded Dh1.75 billion in sales during the first quarter of this year, marking a 10 per cent increase over the corresponding period last year. Sales were up across all three terminals, with a 23 per cent rise in Terminal 2 and an 11 per cent growth in Terminal 3, which accounts for 62 per cent of the retailer’s total turnover. Perfume, beverages and gold were the top selling categories during the first quarter, followed by cosmetics, handbags and small leather products, and “gifts from Dubai”. Sales of perfume grew by 16 per cent to Dh286.4 million, while sales of cosmetics reached Dh141.3 million (up 30 per cent), handbags and small leather products touched Dh25 million (up 62 per cent) and “gifts from Dubai” reached Dh33 million (up 9 per cent).

 

Tiffany & Co.'s profit slipped 56%

Tiffany & Co.'s worldwide sales rose 5% year on year to $1.298 billion and same-store sales improved 2% for the fourth quarter that ended on January 31. The retailer's cost of sales increased 1.6% to $513 million; however, Tiffany & Co. recorded an arbitration expense of $480 million with Swatch, which led to reporting a quarterly loss of $104 million compared with earnings of $180 million one year ago.

The watches unveiled this year presented numerous innovations, both in functions and design. Women took a front seat with more timepieces imagined especially with them in mind. Mechanical or quartz, they continue to combine Swiss excellence with the ultimate in refined elegance.
