In the fourth of his on-going spot reports from Baselworld 2008, Keith W. Strandberg, our Geneva-based international correspondent turns the limelight on unique watches and examines some distinctive watches that have been creating waves.

Unique Watches

One of the greatest luxuries in the world is to have products you love that are special and that not everyone else has. This idea gained traction in the watch world early, with the introduction of limited editions, and has continued as watch companies work hard to create unique designs. Not only do these designs allow the watch wearers to stand out, they also make it possible for a brand to make a statement and be noticed in a marketplace that is increasingly crowded.
Unlike boutique brands, which can make a very limited number of watches and still survive because the designs are so unique, bigger brands have to decide between cutting edge design and pushing too far, into the area where a watch is a commercial flop.
One of the most unique designs I've seen at the BaselWorld show is Perrelet's new Diamond Flower watch, which combines the brand's signature technology, the double rotor (one on the dial and one on the back of the movement) with artistry, as the rotor on the dial is shaped like a beautiful flower and can be diamond encrusted as well.
Dewitt makes a strong statement as well with its designs, using its signature columns and interesting subdials to stand out, as well as new materials to make a visual impact.
Jacquet Droz is another brand that is really opening people's eyes with a mixture of classical and traditional styling with great designs and interesting materials (ceramic, enamel, rubber dials, etc.). At this year's BaselWorld, one of its most interesting introductions is a surprisingly readable 24 hour watch with only one hand.
Even the lower priced brands are getting in the great design act, as companies like Hamilton, Kriëger and Victorinox Swiss Army have introduced some great new watches - the Below Zero, X-Copter and US 66 from Hamilton, the cool Skeleton Skeleton from Kriëger and the new Airboss from Victorinox.
No one wants to wear the same watch as everyone else, and brands today are more than happy to satisfy our need for interesting designs.
