Sotheby’s sold one of the most iconic and revolutionary watches ever to be presented at auction. Owned by the world’s most influential watch designer, Gérald Genta’s personal Royal Oak, made circa 1978, soared to CHF 2,107,000 ($2,130,767), becoming the most valuable vintage Audemars Piguet watch ever sold at auction. The iconic Royal Oak was the star of the Important Watches: Part I sale, which brought a total of CHF 19.2 million ($19.3 million) – amongst the highest sales total for a watches auction at Sotheby’s and the second highest achieved in Geneva (est. CHF 13m – 20.9m / $13.1m – 21.1m). The auction attracted an influx of bidders from 58 countries – a 20% increase from the year prior – with more than a quarter of buyers choosing to purchase online.
