Indian gems exports rise 45 percent in December 2009

Exports of gems and jewellery from India, the world’s largest supplier, rose 45 percent in December 2009 compared to December 2008, driven by sales of diamonds. Shipments rose to USD $ 1.89 billion in the month from USD $ 1.3 billion a year earlier, according to data from the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) of India. Exports may rise as much as 5 percent in the year to March 31, 2010 said Vasant Mehta, Chairman of the Council.
